Surf travel planner template

Introduction

Planning a surf trip can be exciting, but it can also get overwhelming with so many things to decide on and keep track of, like destinations, seasons, visas, and surf spots. When I planned my surf trip to Southeast Asia, I wanted a simple way to organize everything in one place.

That’s why I created a Surf Travel Planner Template. It’s a simple Google Sheets document designed to keep your trip organized from start to end.

Further down you can download my template and use it to plan your own trip. In the video of this post I also explain exactly how I planned my trip using this template.

What's inside the surf travel planner template

The template is easy to use and flexible. Once you download it you can either use it as-is or make your own adjustments if desired. The surf travel planner template has two main tabs you’ll use to organize your trip:

Destinations tab

This is where the planning starts. If you’re unsure which surf destination fits you best, this tab will help you compare them side by side.

You can list things like:

  • Dry season / wet season

  • Best surf season

  • Surf breaks in the area

  • Safety considerations

  • Overall vibe (busy, chill, family-friendly, party scene, etc.)

Note: In the template, I’ve already listed countries in and around Southeast Asia, since I used it to plan my own surf trip to these areas. However, I haven’t researched every country in detail myself. It’s important to do your own research to make sure each destination:

  • Matches your surfing ability

  • Has good surf conditions during the time of year you plan to go

  • Offers the necessary infrastructure for beginner surfers (lessons, rentals, safety, etc.)

Feel free to add or remove countries in your copy of the template so it fits your own surf trip plans if you feel like you are missing any countries. This template is just a starting point — the research and final decisions are up to you!

Travel Planner tab

Once you’ve chosen your destination(s), this tab helps you organize all the details of your trip.

Here you can note down each item you need to plan, such as:

  • Flights

  • Accommodation

  • Visas

  • Travel insurance

  • Transport (scooter, car rental, transfers, etc.)

For each item, you can set a date, add the estimated cost, and mark the status (planned, booked, paid). This way, you always know what’s done, what’s still pending, and how your budget is shaping up.

The goal of this tab is to give you a clear overview of your trip, so nothing gets forgotten and you know about how much it will cost.
